POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position is located on-site at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. The Laborer provides essential support in the alterations and fittings of military uniforms for service members. This role ensures uniforms are prepared, fitted, and maintained to meet U.S. Marine Corps standards. The Laborer assists tailors, seamstresses, and fitters in preparing garments, conducting basic alterations, transporting items, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with uniform fittings by preparing garments, organizing fitting rooms, and supporting tailors during alterations.
  • Perform basic alterations (hemming, sewing on patches, attaching buttons, steaming/pressing garments) under supervision.
  • Measure and mark garments as directed by supervisors or tailors.
  • Transport uniforms and alteration materials within the shop and to designated storage areas.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the alterations and fittings area, ensuring tools and supplies are stocked.
  • Operate sewing machines, pressing equipment, and other tools as trained.
  • Perform quality checks to ensure uniforms meet military standards before returning items to service members.
  • Comply with safety, security, and confidentiality requirements in accordance with government and company policies.
  • Support inventory control of uniforms, alteration supplies, and shop equipment.
  • Report issues, operational delays, or material shortages to supervisory staff in a timely manner.
  • Provide professional, courteous, and timely customer service to U.S. Marine Corps personnel, ensuring all inquiries, concerns, and special garment requests are handled with accuracy, discretion, and a commitment to excellence.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED required, completion of formal tailoring or fashion pro
  • Experience in garment handling, tailoring, or alterations preferred but not required (on-the-job training provided).
  • Ability to follow instructions, learn quickly, and work in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to lift to 25 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
  • Basic knowledge of sewing techniques, fabric handling, or willingness to be trained.
  • Knowledge of military uniform standards, particularly those related to USMC dress codes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with diverse teams and military personnel.
  • Must be eligible to work on military installation and pass background checks required by the Department of Defense.
  • Willingness to learn, cross-train and become knowledgeable in other functional areas.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Indoor tailoring and fitting environment with access to sewing machines, ironing stations, and fitting rooms.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, bending, and use of hands and fingers.
  • Fast-paced, detail-oriented environment with peak workloads during ceremonial and seasonal uniform updates.
  • May require occasional extended hours during high-demand fitting periods (e.g., graduations, ceremonies, or inspections).
  • Structured and regulated setting with strict quality and delivery standards in support of U.S. Marine Corps operational needs.
